Spandex is a great example as a helper to fat guys like me :0)

But, polymers in plastics give the plastic the elasticity to "spring back" and have a memory. It also expands the molecules so that it "can" bend into various shapes, and allows it, when heated to be very flexible.

When certain things are done to metals, such as heating, they become pliable, to bend easier.

I dont know much about physics, so that is all I can give you...
