err you just plug it in - usb is zero config plug and play !

if you mean pc to pc you need a special one, but they are cheap

have not used a usb datalink cable before yet but soon.

1st thing before you get the cable, check if the cable needs any driver and if so, is it for windows 98 secondedition or windows xp or etc.

and also, ask if the cable is for usb 1.x or 2.x version usb ports.

Normally when you purchase a USB data cable, it will come with it software.

Be careful with USB data cable as if it is design for Win 98, Win ME or Win 2000. If so, it might not work with Win XP.
