Well, I live in China, but I'm an American citizen. I loved Japan (or what I had seen of Japan) mainly because of the food and the fashion. I've never visited Europe, but I'm sure I'd like it.

Out of all the countries I've been to (US, Japan, China, the Philippines - not a lot) I'd prefer living in the US because it's simply a matter of convenience. Japan is nice, but the living cost is very high and the cities are rather crowded. China is very cheap (in terms of living costs) but the hustle and bustle of Shanghai is a bit too much for my small town mentality.

However, I do enjoy staying in Shanghai for high school because it does give me more of a world view, if you would. I've met people from many different countries and cultures here (40 different nationalities in my school, total) with different opinions on a variety of issues in the world. Also, going to a fairly wealthy international school has allowed me plenty of opportunities to pursue work in the community service and humanitarian work field by giving me both a larger area to help in and more access to people who need help. Not only can I work in the local community, but I also have the opportunity to travel either overseas (the Philippines) or to other parts of China to help people and see what problems there are.

So, sorry for the longwindedness. I do prefer living in the US, but I can't deny that living overseas is a unique experience for somebody my age.

Australia. I reckon it has provided the best of lives over the past 70 years or so, so I was lucky. But where else? Britain, much to my surprise - because I grew up with books that made its landscape the most familiar world of our imagination (which gave me a chip on my shoulder against the assumption that Oz was upside down and a colony) but found it and its Hobbits, really so much as Tolkein described when I actually saw it I adored it - a painter's paradise with quaint doors in the houses and paths across farmers' fields from pub to pub. Norway, for the directness of its people and the fey, dramatic quality that hovers behind them and infuses the landscape too. Denmark for the cheerful "jazz" quality that seems to infect everything and everybody there. Sweden for the umber quality of everything, and the sea. Tuscany for the light. Greece for the joy of being amongst grown up children. Ireland, perhaps, for the sake of a really dinkum untravelled Guiness, and the wild wit, and the fun and the sorrow of being human - but not to live there too long. Holland, perhaps, for the reliability and honesty of its people, and the landscape, and the autumn light. Ah, for enough lives!

I like Canada. Though it's reputedly cold, the maritime (east) provinces and west, BC, provinces are awesome, and even though Canada is the second largest country in the world (after Russia), it has a small population and is not as corrupt and arrogant as its southern neighbor.

I used to like the US, but since it became so arrogant, militaristic, and corrupt, I am disappointed in it.

I like Panama because it is pretty lovely, spans two oceans that you can see at the same time on a clear day, and is a cross-roads of the world (Panama Canal).

I like China because it has an interesting culture, its food is fantastic, its people hard-working but also fun-loving.

I like Switzerland because it's so independent it won't even join the EU, even though it's surrounded by EU countries, and it's beautiful.

I live in Italy and usually spend my holidays in England, France or Germany. I like the architecture and the museums of the big cities.

But...

I should like to spend a word for the too much forgotten Heart of Europe: the beautiful land and the wonderful cities of Poland.

I have been there for a while in the 90's and hope to be back soon.

I love England, and would love to live there someday. It's beautiful and so much richer in culture and heritage than the US; the only thing stopping me is the knowledge that no matter what, I'll always be an outsider.
