First, I agree with DarthSabbath. Second, if you go into any technical field, be prepared to study for life, to face lay offs every 5-7 years, and to have people who are not as smart as you do MUCH better than you (both politically and economically). A lawyer fresh out of school will make as much as a 15+ year engineer with a master's.
If you do go into CS, specialize in something that cannot be exported easily (I do real time machine control -- it isn't easy to send a large industrial machine to India or China).
Be prepared to spend at least 1/2 of your work day writing -- not programming.
BTW: my bachelor's is in Mechanical Engineering and my master's is in IT. I've been working controls software for 20 years and love it. My only regrets are that I did not learn about people management early enough. It would have helped my career.

Why? Because it's a good career that you can make great money at if you're talented. If you truly are passionate about computers and the science of computing, then by all means, go for it. Just be aware of a few things:
1. Don't major in CS because "you're good with computers." Just because you know how to run a virus scan and defrag does not mean you'll make it in CS.
2. Computer Science is not the study of computers; it's the study of computing. You do not need a computer to study computer science... you can do it all on paper or in your head if you want.
3. If you're not good with math and science, think VERY hard before majoring in CS, or any engineering field.
4. Have you ever programmed before? If not, you may want to try learning a language before majoring in CS. If you can teach yourself, you just might have the mind to make it.
I don't mean to discourage you... CS is a wonderful area of study, but it's not for everyone. Most people just aren't cut out for the major, and flunk out. You really do have to be a little bit crazy. :-)

I am a computer science and engineering major. If you really enjoy learning about computers and working with them, then you should chose this field. There are many careers you can get with this degree. You can be a systems analyst, programmer, computer forensics investigator, software engineer, systems engineer, etc, the list goes on. Through electives you can take courses in networking, robotics, modeling, simulation, artificial intelligence. So this career option opens up a lot of different opportunities.
