Freedom is the right to choose. If you can buy your own house, walk around the streets without being searched by the authorities regularly, buy the food and other things you want, go on holidays, watch whatever TV, DVD's Video you want, join a union and voice your opinion (despite whether it is listened to) without being taken away and never seen again, I would say you are reasonably close to living a life of freedom.
