On my computer microsoft word will only open in safe mode, the problem is a recent one, how can it be resolved

Have you picked up a virus? Do a virus check with something AVG from www.grisoft.com.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Word?

in safe mode use the roll back facility to roll it back to a time where it worked properly
