256 MB is too little for today's programs to run on XP - upgrade your RAM to at least 512 MB - to make sure you buy the correct RAM, visit http://www.crucial.com or http://www.kingston.com and use their configurator to ensure you get the correct RAM.

You can also read over these to learn more about virtual memory and what you should set it to and how to set it.:

Try this

Right Click My Computer > Properties > Advanced Tab > Performance Settings > Advanced Tab > Virtual Memory Change

Choose a Drive Letter (Hard Disk) which you have the more free space

Customize size:
Initial Size : (minimum size for your virtual memory)
Maximum Size : ( Maximum size, do not exceed to the free space avilable, and also do not consume all of it because windows will prompt you to free more space)

Click Set > Ok

Notice that the Maximum Size that youve set is deducted to free space to thedrive letter that youve choose .. This is because it is use as your vitual memory.

Haha... That is little... Physical memory means the amount of RAM you have so I think you should go upgrade to 1 GB... The more things you are doing on your computer... The more RAM is being used up... So upgrade your RAM... It's quite cheap now... But bear in mind some computers only have 2 RAM slots so you gotta know how to buy the RAM sticks... The best is to buy a direct 1 GB stick... Good luck!

if u can provide extra information like, wht is ur operating system, wht kind of softwares u run, i cud be able to give a better answer...
in general that happens when enough memory is not available to run all the programs simultaneously..or if u run a program that requires a high amount or memory that message might appear...
some times it might be due to the limitations in paging file size too
