Get Apache web server for Linux (or unix). The L.A.M.P. stack is very common. Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP. This gives you everything you need. Dont be afraid, there are a lot of great sites to help you. Linux is very elegant, and very intimidating to some. (Bill Gates)

An HTTP server isn't an easy project. I've never done it, but my recommendation would be to use a high level language, such as Java or Python, that will handle most of the work, if you can do it. Unix is the devil's "operating system". A joke gone very, very bad. Type in "man tunefs" and look at the last sentence. Forget Unix and pretend you've never heard of it.
