I chew several trays of ice a day and have for years- drinking water isn't my thing so I get my water in a nice crunchy snack. My dentist and I have talked about it and she doesn't see any damage to my teeth. I have, however cut myself a few times. Make smaller ice cubes with cold water that has run a while and they break up easier without damaging the soft tissues of your mouth. If you don't have healthy, strong teeth then you may experience some tooth chipping.
Some people get cravings for ice because their bodies are short of iron (not me) so if this is something new for you and you aren't getting enough iron in your diet then you may want to talk to your doctor about a blood test and iron supplements. If it is an iron deficiency then that should stop the craving.
Me I find it a crunchy tasty snack with zero calories.

I think a few things about it. It could for sure be harmful to your teeth. It's real hard and some people's teeth are very sensitive to tempurature extremes too.
My grandma was told by a doctor that keeping ice out of her drinks would keep her from getting gas.
I don't know if it has any harmful effects in this respect; but the disorder that they ask you about when you are pregnant, asks about ingesting ice. PICA.
That's all I know, good luck.

It won't do any permanent harm to your body, if that's what you mean but it is possible to fracture a tooth.

from what i heard, when crunching on it, like many other hard solids, it can cause chipping on your teeth but that may just be speculation
