Althouth the exact reason is not confirmed, there are numerous things that may have lead to the break up.

One thing is the death of manager Brian Epstein, which added emotional stress along with divisions about who the next manager should be.
Another thing is each members' role in the group, with harrison and starr unhappy with the amount of their material accepted for albums, and with john and paul often clashing due to different artistic opinions. In the late 60s it is said that paul took charge of the band (to the dismay of other members), however if this did not take place the white album would probably not have been produced.
Lastly, there is a rumour that the beatles had a rule of no bringing significant others to recording sessions and near the break up john began to bring yoko. She could possibly be credited with steering John away from the band through encouraging different artistic opinions, thus being why so many people blame her.

Of course these are all just speculations and none will ever be proven true or false.

George wanted to drop out before Yoko Ono came to the picture. Beatlemania was getting out of hand and he felt like it was destroying the musical essence of the beatles. Of cource, Yoko was the one that finished the beatles off.
