$50MM means $50,000,000. It comes from the Roman Numeral M meaning $1,000. Although technically MM stands for $2,000 in Roman Numerals, when talking about financial data, MM means a thousand thousand, or 1000 times 1000, which is a million.

New businesses start out as ideas. At some point they will need money to grow. Take for example, Yahoo. It was started by two grad students from Cali. The idea was to have a way to organize all the information on the net in a searchable form. When they started they were two relatively poor students. Especially with internet businesses, it took them a long time to make money and most of them ended up failing. However, if they are going to grow it into a real business they need employees, office space, equipment, etc. This is where venture capitalists come into the picture. They will invest millions in the company, for owining a part of the company, and provide business guidance to get it to the next stage of growth. Typically there will be 1000s of opportunites for the VC's as they are called to invest in. It is risky for the VC because if the company goes bust quickly they can lose their investment. However, if they made good investments they can make huge profits. Most VCs have an exit strategy. After the company has gained some maturity it can be taken public. This is when a company gets traded on the stock exchange. The VCs can sell stock at this point to reap their profits.
