Getting a cable modem alone is not enough. For hooking on the network of the cable company, u will need loginid and password. Using wireless network, if unprotected by the owner, is a simpler affair.

I wud recommend you to get a DSL connection if you are considering a new HI -speed internet connection. Reasons mentioned below : --

1. +++++
DSL technology supports much hiigher Speeds (upto 8 Mbps in ADSL modems)

Thus it's future proof.

2.++++
The DSL techniology relies on the phone line and has higher reliability in addition to better speeds .

Another reason is : the Cable Cos . has Network down times , since they have repeaters in neighbour hood vicinity, which might be powered off... due to some reasons.

3.+++++
The hardware available for phone line surge is more easily available for surge protection on phoneline....instead of surge protection for cable line.

4.++++
DSL modems have model for WIreless (WI-Fi) internet on Laptop .

All cable modems are about the same. They are all compatible with any computer. Just go to fry's or ebay.com and buy one (they're really cheap too.)
