Non availability of irrigation and low Productivity are the drawbacks. Productivity is very low due to uneconomic holdings. as a result the farmer is unable to mechanise farm work. Bullocks are not cheap - their maintenance is very high as comparared to a tractor. Unless holding per family go up to at least 25 acres, a farmer cannot make ends meet. average at present is less than 2 acres. society must draw up plans to entice persons to quit agriculture and take up other sector jobs. a migrating agriculturist's obvious choice is a manufacturing job in a factory - he cannot aspire to become a software expert. But due to rigid labour laws mass manufacturing has not/ will not come to india. communists are entirely responsible for this. they wish to protect high paying public sector jobs. as a result crores of poor persons dont get jobs at all. Surat's labour force is 75% Oriya. that only means that a poor worker is ready to migrate - but only if job opportunities are available. the second factor - irrigation is a function of investment. since no capital is available to a farmer, he is unable to irrigate his land. this is a vicious circle. Unless society/ government does not break this, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Communists must be dumped - some in the Arabian Sea and the balance in the Bay of Bengal.
