Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).
3. Married couples should welcome God's gift of children and, therefore, artificial birth control was against the will of God.

With love in Christ.

Any preventive form are considered in line with abortion. It's unfortunate that they don't realize how often sperm & eggs don't "match",miscarriages, etc. If god designed bodies to function that way, the technically, should he exist, is the biggest provider of abortion. Mmm, can you smell the irony? And, like some of the other posters pointed out, Catholics at least though probably more than a few Protestants and/or Orthodx believe along the lines that sex if for procreation only. Even of of the old "saints" who also were equated with being a philosopher (either, Aquinas, Aqustine...maybe Anselm, but I lean more towards one of the first two) even staed that enjoying sex during proceation would be considered a sin...this coming from a hedonist who converted later to Catholisim. Personally, I think he just got to old, didn't have any Viagra, and so since he couldn't do it, believed no one should.

You must mean the Catholic church. Not all churches prohibit contraceptives and sterilization.
The reason for this lies in the historical teachings that affirm life to be sacred and special because it is given by God.
