Your question is far too vague. What do you mean by the "US". The passing of laws by far causes more problems for an economy than not. Passing of laws generally redistributes power, unfortunately usually at the expense of peoples freedom. It is frightening where some seemingly harmless or hopefully beneficial legislation have led.

People must understand the underpinnings of the government under which they live, but we get further and further away from doing so, deferring to needs to feel good or develop self-esteem rather than rather than try to discern truth about ourselves or our environment. But we must have the newest cell phone, download those mp3's and see the latest George Clooney movie, don't we?

Not directly, but the way it is now set up the law makers make plenty. This is not what was originally intended, nor what is 'supposed' to be happening. If you are really interested, a thorough search of the internet will teach you much more than what can be said here. Don't go to government sights, look up key words: currency, freedom and liberty are good places to start.

What are you talking about? Your question is nonsensical.
