History enables mankind to view the past:but, I doubt that reviewing the past will have a significant impact on decisions being made today or in the future, simply because the past is history.
Students, whether elementary, junior high (some districts refer to this age as "middle school"), or high school, don't give much credence to the "past". When you were 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18, or even 20 or 21, were you really concerned about history? No. We were being 8, 12, 15, or 21. We were in the "immediacy" of our life. Only when you get "old" do you begin to "look back".
As a teacher, I believe parents and educators have an obligation to begin "history" as it is today. Yes, a society's past is crucial to understanding that society's evolution; but present and future concerns are more paramount..

ive read the others and basically i agree, history is very important, but i think you should take those answers with a grain of salt. The only people who stop by the "history" section to answer questions are historians/ ppl who love history. So we all think its important, but then again that might not be true. (PS im a guy and i think about history all the time, everything from what will happen if i skip breakfast to how will the world end)

History is passed down from parent to child for 1,000s of years and results in the way most of the world is. It helps you understand why things are they way they are today so that you can more easily make change for the better.
How can you address the issues between the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans or the Jews and Arabs, or the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland, and arrive at an acceptable solution if you don't understand the underlying social dogmas in their societies? What do you say to an African American who tells you that European Americans of them restitution if you don't know history?

I can't speak for every man, but there are things that make us men, we realize how we have come to this moment, and why we are like this. Sadly it also is a reminder of what terrible acts the world had to endure. Yes we do make our own history, but it is only a tiny piece of a larger puzzle that is as fragile as glass
