Only people that died were the Wicked Witches of the East and West.

There has been a rumor for years that at the scene where we first meet the cowardly lion in the background you can see a figure of what looks like a "munchkin" that hung himself. You can see something and yes, it does look human, bit it's not. It's just the way the props and the fake trees are placed in the background. If it was a person by now someone would have edited the film to help hide it.
But, there is a scene in the movie that has an ostrich in it that was not suppose to be there. I believe it is at the scene where the Wicked witch shows up and threatens Dorothy and the others and sets fire to Scarecrow. You will see the ostrich running around in the background. He escaped from another movie set next door to where they were filming Wizard of Oz.

It, indeed, is a large bird, probably a crane. The crew borrowed several large birds from a nearby zoo to make the forest set look more alive and natural. The crane stretches out its wings in the middle back of the set just as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Lion start to skip down the YBR singing "We're Off to see the Wizard" after the "beehive" run-in with the Wicked Witch of the West.

There are lots of rumors and urban legends surrounding the movie. This one is the most wide-spread, probably followed next by the idea that the munchkins were "little drunks." That idea was spread after Judy Garland cracked the joke in an interview. A few of them might have had a little temper, but they weren't stumbling through the studio.

Buddy Ebsen came pretty damn close during the filming of The Wizard of Oz.

This is an excerpt from Wikipedia explaining the whole chain of events:

"Casting the film was problematic, with actors shifting roles repeatedly at the beginning of filming. One of the primary changes was in the role of the Tin Woodman. The Tin Man was originally slated for Ray Bolger, and Buddy Ebsen was to play the Scarecrow. Bolger was unhappy with the part, and convinced producer Mervyn LeRoy to recast him as the Scarecrow. Ebsen didn't object to the change at first; he recorded all his songs, went through all the rehearsals, and started filming with the rest of the cast. But nine days after filming began, he suffered a reaction to the aluminum powder makeup, as it had coated his lungs as he breathed it in while it was applied daily. Consequently, Ebsen (now in critical condition) had to be hospitalized and leave the project. MGM did not publicize the reasons for Ebsen's departure and not even his replacement, Jack Haley, initially knew the reason."

the scene that is so famous is not at the end. Its when they come upon the woodsman house and the tin man. In the back ground there is a shape of a person in between the trees. I read up on this and while it looks like a man its just art.

It's very hard to see exactly what it is, so i really cant say it's someone being hung or some shadow from something else. So see if for yourself.

No its not true.. its jsut a story that was developed after the movie was released... there IS a scene wehre it LOOKS like one of the munchkins hung himself int eh back ground.. but its false..... honestly if you think abotu it.. with the number of people the amount of camreas that are on a movie set.. HOW would anyone even begin to set up fro somerthing of the sort without notice.. ro without someone rushing to their aid int eh middle of the scene...... i believe what it actuallyw as.. is in the movie they used alot of live animals in teh back ground. and of of the animals were the cause to blame for that scene....

Its not at the end of the movie. I believe its after she meets the Tin Man or the Lion. If you get an older copy of the movie you can see someone hanging in the backround.

No. In a scene that was cut out of the final print, the characters are dancing and singing a song ("The Jitterbug") and in the background you get a brief glimpse of what could be interpreted as somebody jumping off a bucket as if to hang himself. Actually, it was just one of the stagehands realizing that he was on camera and jumping clear.
