General or novel writing, not poetry, journalism, etc. Unless it is a mindblowing book how to write amazing poetry, if you know of one then I would love to hear about that. Otherwise, just general or novel writing.

The Art of Creative Writing, by Olaf Ruhen (may be out of print and difficult to get but it's by far the best, most comprehensive key to writing fiction of all kinds I found in 60 years) - Fowler's Modern English Usage (there are other equivalents, but I love Fowler) - and, of course, Roget's Thesaurus, preferably an older edition with synonyms and antonyms opposed. No two words carry exactly the same meaning, because of sound association and much more. Roget not only helps you find the appropriate word for your thought, but can also help you redefine your thought more exactly, or extend it. Writing without knowing Fowler and Roget is like trying to play a piano without strings. There's a lot of that about! Good luck

1) "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser-- This is an excellent reference for any kind of writing. It will make your emails, essays, stories, and other writing clearer. I recommend this to everyone who wants to improve their writing skills.

2) "Bird By Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life" by Anne Lamott-- This is slightly more geared towards fiction writing, but can be helpful when you are attacking ANY large project in your life. Definitely a must for creative writers, students, or people who are looking for an entertaining book on writing.

3) "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. This definitely targets creative writing, and focuses on the practice of writing. I write a lot of poetry and am working on a novel, and this is incredibly motivational to me.

Stephen King's "On Writing" is fantastic. Very concise, basic stuff, including how to avoid the runaround when getting published. The rest of my good ones are poetry and screenwriting...
