Hello. I am about to install Linux. I have the iso. file downloaded but I am not sure where to go from there. I know that I have to burn it to a disk but when I restarted my computer and pressed F12 to bring up the "one time bootup method" option thing and chose "Boot from cd" after I thought that I had burned it to a cd the right way the computer didn't detect that it was a bootable cd. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

What did the bootup screen say? If the CD is not bootable it will skip the CD drive and boot off the hard drive or whatever device you have setup next in the boot order. However if you are having trouble having the CD read by the burner you might want to try to burn another copy of the .iso.

And there are more than one distribution of Linux so if you're not having luck with one distribution then you can use another distribution.

Try http://www.distrowatch.com for various distributions and helpful information on each distribution.

And definitely if you want to try linux without installing it, you need to get what's called a Live CD and boot that CD. Non-Live CD's will try to install on first boot.

You need to burn this ISO file as an image rather than just a file onto the CD. If using Nero, one of the menu options will allow you to "Burn Image". Select that, find your ISO file and burn. If you burn it as a file (the way you would burn your mp3 files, for example), it won't work.

If the person who created the ISO image said that it is a bootable image, then you probably burned the ISO image incorrectly. Try using this neat tool to burn your ISO image.
