I think there are a few possibilities but no definitive answers. (Remember, we also never see what's in the black box that Costello gives to Sullivan at graduation.) I think several things are purposely left unanswered so that we the audience feel as uneasy and in the dark as the two main characters, who are constantly trying to find and hide information.
1. It's evidence - the tapes of Costello's conversations, Costigan's identity, whatever else would reveal the set-up should he not be alive in two weeks. Maybe Madolyn passed this on to Dignum, although she also has knowledge that Sullivan is the snitch after hearing the recording.
2. It's something precious to Costigan he wants to be kept safe - for instance, the family photos he had displayed on the coffee table of his mother. (In contrast to Sullivan, he noticed and liked the photo of Madolyn as a kid on her bike, so it's something he connects to.)
3. It's something for Madolyn - maybe a letter where he finally opens up emotionally, or reveals his identity.
4. Last will and testament - because he knew he wasn't coming back.
5. Whatever's in that briefcase in Pulp Fiction.
As to the baby...again, no definitive answers. Madolyn might not know. She clearly isn't interested in having Sullivan be part of it after she finds out who he is (she ignores his question "What about the baby?" after Costigan's funeral) so it seems unlikely she would have forced him to raise another man's child in happier circumstances. But my feeling is that we're meant to think it's Costigan's because we only see a sex scene between the two of them. She and Sullivan go on a date, move in together, share a bed, and argue - but are never seen having sex.

I believe the envelop had Coke that he stole from the crime scene where Costello got killed .. He disappeared and grabbed a half kilo .. He gave it to the shrink because she was most likely a big Coke head . Bill Figured if he couldn't get Collin to pay him the money he had coming he'd at least have the Coke to fall back on and sell for cash .. Barring the shrink didn't jam it all up her nose in the two weeks .. Makes perfect sense 🤔. Your welcome

Yes, I agree totally. I don't see any point to them and most of the comedy is only relevant until the movie they are spoofing becomes outdated and forgotten. However, studios keep making them so I guess there is some profit to be made. I suppose mostly teens are watching them.

A co-worker and I was talking about that today. We decided the envelope had everything about what he knew and what had happened since he had been inside Nicholson's outfit, and was for her to give to Mark Wahlberg, because Martin Sheen was already dead, and Wahlberg was the last person who actually knew who he was and what he was doing. That's why Wahlberg killed him, because he was the last one alive that knew anything about him (remember, Matt Damon erased Leo from the computer, as if he had never been employed with them). As for the baby, it had to be Leo's because Wahlberg was in Damon's apartment, so she had to have let him in to kill Damon. I don't think she would have let Wahlberg in if Damon were really the father of her kid, but I think she would let Wahlberg in based on what Leo's letter probably said. Great movie.
