A gasket is a mechanical seal that serves to fill the space between two objects, generally to prevent leakage between the two objects while under compression. Gaskets are commonly produced by cutting from sheet materials, such as gasket paper, rubber, silicone, metal, felt, fiberglass, or a plastic polymer. Gaskets for specific applications may contain asbestos.

AKS_143_SAYS:

Gaskets are commonly produced by cutting from sheet materials, such as gasket paper, rubber, silicone, metal, felt, fiberglass, or a plastic polymer. Gaskets for specific applications may contain asbestos. It is usually desirable that the gasket be made from a compressible or slightly compressible material such that it tightly fills the space it is designed for, including any slight irregularities.

According to my FRIENDS
gasket:
A metal ring used on some spark plugs to seal pressure between the plug shell and the cylinder head.
A piece of thin compressible material such as cork, rubber, or soft metal, placed between two mating surfaces to form a seal.

gaskets are not mechanical, they are made from steel, felt, rubber, or rtv. They are sandwiched between parts when the are assembled together to prevent leaks. Like an exhaust manifold to a head, or valve cover to the head. Since the mating surface may not match exactly and form an airtight seal, the gasket material can compress in the areas it needs to so you get a great seal.

a gasket is a seal that goes between metal motor parts-metal to metal does not prevent leaks-its just a rubber or cork seal that keeps your enginge fron leakin fluids-head gaskets and some intake gaskets have soft metal in them to crush into any imperfect spots to seal and to keep heat down-a solid gasket would not work with piston heat hitting it directly-thats why they have soft metal like copper inserts-hope this helps

gaskets are like seals placed in between two metal surfaces to prevent leakages. like gearbox gasket prevents gear oil leakage and engine gasket prevents leakage of engine gases.

gaskets are layers of eithr plastic or sheet metal or other materials that are used to put space between 2 objects (ex piston heads and your block) they are intended stop leakage and to keep everything in the block.
