I think there's a good bit on it in the 2nd ed. book The Complete Book of Elves. If I remember correctly, they were power-hungry and finally driven underground through a portal...

If I remember correctly, the Forgotten Realms novel "Evermeet: Island of Elves" gives a pretty god origins dealing with many elven gods, as well as a few others. Basically, Loth was once called Araushnee and was the consort of Corellon Larethian. She bore him two children, Eilistrae and Vhaeraun. She betrayed her lover, tried to invade/take-over Arvandor. She lost, obviously, and was banished to the Abyss in the form of a spider demon. There's a lot more detail in the book (hopefully, it's that one, but there's also a parallel story too, that deals with the sun & moon elves, though I may be mixing that up with another -- still, Evermeet is a pretty good read). Malar and Gruumsh are in it as well. I believe it tells of how Gruumsh lost his eye to Corellon Larethian. Also, though Vhaeraun was evil, Eilistrae was not but agreed to go anyways. I forget how she gets access to "the world above"..maybe because she volunteered instead of being banished. Though her, not all drow are born inherintly evil - Drizzt Do'Urden being the obvious example, but so is Liriel Baenre from the "Starlight and Shadows" trilogy. Of course, it's not always easy for some, especially when the drow ideologies are instilled and indoctinated from birth an. There are other exaples of characters, but I can't think of them now....there are some in the "War of the Spider Queen" six part series.
Wow, this was long...hope it helped.
