A great place to start with the fantastic artists listed in the answer above is David Byrne's Brazil compilation "Brazil Classics, Vol. 1: Beleza Tropical". Also check out the artists on Gilles Peterson's "In Brazil" and "Back In Brazil". They're 2 CD sets featuring older and newer Brazilian artists, covering many different styles.

Sergio Mendes.Music of Mendes : Mas Que Nada[Why No Way] , Pais Tropical[A Tropical Country] , Promise Of A Fisherman, One Note Samba. Sergio Mendes and his group Brazil '66, created some of the best jet set pop ever heard. He is one of Brazil's most famous international musician with a successful career that has spanned over 5 decades.

I'm not a particular fan of this band, but they are raving about them in th UK. The band is called CCS, which is short for "Cansei De Ser Sexy", and they sort of play alternative music.
