I he were my son I would have called 911! If he fell hard enough to knock the wind out of him, he could have a concussion.

The important thing is to remain calm. It probably scared him more than anything. It is definately time to install baby gates and protective covering over your electrical outlets. Remember that dads are not as self concious as we are. Mine was watching TV one time and our 3 yr old shut the oven door on my 1 yr olds hand, which wouldn't have been so bad if dad hadn't been cooking pizza. I had been at the hospital and got back a few minutes after it happened. He didn't even call me! I took her straight to the ER and they gave her some of that wonderful white cream, slyvan I think it's called. Anyway, they are 15 and 12 now and still alive. But trust your instincts. If he is acting funny or his pupils are dialated in any way, then go ahead and take him. You really don't know how far he fell or anything, so I would just watch him. You also may want to slap your husband in the head or steal the remote next time you need him to watch him. Good luck and God bless.

If your child hit his head and there is no swelling that you can see, there can be a worse problem. When there is a bump or swelling on the head that is visible, it means that the injury is on the outside of the skull, and there is usually little or no brain damage or injury. If you see no sign of swelling or a bump on the head, there could be internal damage to his brain. I just read an article in my Parents Magazine about this. A little boy hit his head pretty hard, but there was no bump or swelling. By the next morning, he was unconsious. He had severe bleeding in his brain. He had to have immediate brain surgery, and he is doing fine now. I don't mean to scare you, but this is when you should be worried. I would take him to the doctor first thing in the morning. Don't just check on him tonight. Wake him up every 30 minutes or so to make sure that he can regain consiousness. Look at his pupils and make sure that they are dialating properly and at the same time. If you are truly concerned now, take him to the emergency room. It is the better to be safe than sorry. Good luck, and I hope your little guy is ok!!

you should have called the doctor after it happened. this happened to my 2 year old and he fell from the top stair which is number 14. he was with his grandpa and we had a gate up but he leaned over the gate and came down like a rag doll. we called the doctor and was told to bring him in even though he seemed fine which thank god he was. he could have had some unseen injury to his head or internal organs. please call a doctor and have your child checked out. invest in a gate but you still need to keep a good eye on your child around the stairs.

You should never put a child to sleep after they fall and hit their head espically if they do not cry right away. That could be the sign of a head injury. First question was did he cry right away? does he have a bump on his head if so does it go in or out of the head? is he responsive when you try to wake him up every 2 hours? if you answer no to question 1&3 and answer that his bump on his head is dented inward then you should take him to the doctor right away because it may have caused some damage to your child

First of all, don't blame yourselves, kids fall......BUT, the important thing is how far did he fall? And what part of the body has a bump or bruise? Gently feel all over him 1 area at a time,to see what hurts..spine? arm? tummy? head? Concussions are tricky, did he vomit? sometimes a sign...can you wake him? sleeping isn't always a good sign..internal bleeding in the brain can not show up for days..CALL A DOCTOR TONIGHT!! NOW!! Let them ask you the right questions to evaluate the situation! no charge for asking. I can see not wanting to spend 6 hours in an ER waiting for help...but a phone call should be made. Don't have a Dr? call anybody in the phone book, get evaluated,NOW. You can't quiz a baby to check his memory etc. Watch for lethargy in next few days....bottom line, trust your instincts...plus, since you have a computer, read up on concussions..Any doubt in AM, go to the doctor! try waking him off and on tonight, check his reactions and pupils....and obviously, put up a baby gate...GOD BLESS YOU-good luck.....my son is 17 now, but we had lots of scares along the way...I had a concussion at 14 myself, amnesia for 2 hours, threw up, and doctor told my parents to keep waking me to see if OK, and I was told not to do any activity for a week, even walking upstairs, or going to a Dr. even, in case I had a blood clot that could dislodge and move in my body. But a toddler can't be restrained like that, or quizzed for normal brain activity... A DOCTOR SHOULD BE QUESTIONED ASAP ----NOW! CALL NOW..............didn't mean to scare you, but you never know....so ask a Doctor! bye- good luck -hang in there- lots of more bumps to come.........he'll be fine, but just in case, call someone!

Ugh, mine fell down the stairs once too...it's awful! In general, if they are crying after it happens, it is a GOOD sign, as opposed to being stunned or unconscious. Call your doc at the very least, but babies are tough - a lot tougher than people give them credit for! After the doctor, run to Walmart for a gate! :) Good luck.

Get used to it. They are going to fall A LOT at that age. Was it a few steps or like a whole freaking flight of stairs because that really matters. Look for swelling and bruises. If you find either you should get it checked out just in case.

Honestly, kids at that age are going to let you know if it hurts somewhere.

I would do exactly what you're doing. My mother was watching my niece when she was a baby and she had her on the table, just turned for 5 seconds and she fell off, onto a linoleum floor. She cried but there was no permanent damage.

Put something in front of stairs firstly, and I would have taken him to the nearest Emergency Department at the hospital to get him checked, the sooner than the later he might has concussion and if he is not breathing properly ....mmmm I would be going by your mothers' instincts...
