I like the fact that they think of themselves as one nation, not a whole lot of different factions...they're not like Canadians where everyone is something-Canadian [eg. Italian-Canadian, French-Canadian, Chinese-Canadian, etc. etc.]... Americans are first of all Americans! At least that's the overall impression I get. I'm a Canadian ticked off with all these something-Canadians.
Sorry, pet peeve that turns into a mini-rant!

I don't like generalisations, but maybe it's a good thing about many of you, that you're opening your minds about what your president is like. I hear that if an election were held now, a Democrat would win.
I also like the way you reacted on September 11th. Not the revenge part, but how you all felt it was an attack on the whole nation, not just on those who died. I think it shows you're a united nation. Here, in Argentina, we had two similar attacks (I bet you didn't know) in '92 and '94. Both times, the targets were Jewish institutions. And many people are still saying that the attacks weren't on Argentina, or on Argentinians, but on Jewish people.
On the other hand, as an Argentinian (and therefore an "American") I resent that you US people have borrowed the word "America" to mean ONLY the United States. You ARE Americans, of course. But so is everyone from Alaska to Argentina. I wish you could use a different word to mean a US inhabitant. How about "a Unionist"? Somebody once suggested "a US-er", but that's mean and ironic.

I like that 'Americans' have a pioneering spirit. That 'go get-em' attitude that some resent is actually one of the reasons you are at the forefront of many things. I've been to the states a few times and know many US Americans and the one main thing they have in common is that they are your friends for life. And, as an Australian woman, I have never been treated with more respect than by US American men (I've been to England, Canada, Malaysia, Brazil and Brunei).

The one thing I like about the Americans is their passion for free speech. I also find them far friendlier than some other nationalities. Having said that, I do believe generalisations can be dangerous. People are basically the same everywhere...some are good and some perhaps not too good.

I like that they are more outspoken and are not so afraid to make their opinions known.
I have an American friend that cracks me up all the time with her straightforward approach.
And they're probably the ones who won't shrink away from telling you you have a veggie stuck in your teeth.
So if you're looking for honesty and are not afraid of being burnt with the truth told to your face, get an American friend.

Am Algerian Muslim living in Scotland
Do not like or deslike Americans; I simply believe there is bad and good every where (including Algeria and Scotland). Those people I find nice and who are nice to me I like; those people I find not nice and are not nice to me, I am simply indifferent to them; whatever race, kreed ...etc. So this principle I apply all the time every where.
Some of my friends are from the US, and I get on exteremely well with them, although many of our ideas and opinions about several subjetcts are very dissimilar ...etc.
Hope I'm making sense

I've never met an American I did not like. They have all been very friendly, tolerant, polite and simple. I do not mean simple as in stupid but as in straightforward, not cynical or jaded. I have never met Tom Cruise, however.

I'm sorry. I can't contribute as I'm an American. But you're fairly articulate, for a foreigner. So your responders should be numerous and knowledgable.
