I recently have had some close encounters with deer and want to avoid them if I can. How effective are deer whistles? Do they work? If so how dod they work? Is there any harm in using a deer whistle? Are there other suggestions for avoiding deer? Thanks.

Sure, the deer hears the whistle, runs out in the road to see who's whistling at him. Bam... we eat tonight.

The place I worked out gave them out to all the employees and "highly recommended" that wer put them on out vehicles.
One wise guy almost got dismissed because he put his on his hard-hat and drove aorund the mill on the maintenace four-wheeler with them on.

I don't think they do. They are suppose to send a highpitch whisle and it is theoretically going to make the deer run away..Every accident involving a deer that I have investigated had one of those whistles on their vehicle. So what to do if on back road or where deer like to jump across the road out of nowhere. Drive with your brights on it stuns them hence you won't hit them. Drive slower don't overdrive your headlights you'll have better reaction time if the jump in front of you. I hope this helps

Ohio Highway Patrol did a study a couple of years ago, and put the whistles on a percentage of their fleet. At the end of the year, the deer strikes per mile driven between the with and the without cars was about the same. No, they don't work...

They must work really well, because I have never used them and have never hit a deer. A guy I worked with put on a set and hit a deer the next morning going to work.

I've heard both yes and no. I think it only works if your driving above a certain speed. What I do is intermittently sound my horn while driving on backroads, as long as no one is around. I don't know if that works but I haven't hit a deer yet.
