The only speech therapist I spoke to recommended it at the age of three for my nephew. He was speech delayed. He is fine now, but there is no way to know how he would have done without speech therapy.

They should be giving you things to work on at home. Class time is too limited for it to do much good without home follow through.

To be honest, I am sure any speech therapist that you speak with will recommend therapy; that is their business. You will get various answers from people who have been through it. The ones who say it did not help may not have done much home follow-up. Those of us who have had positive results have no way of knowing how the child would have done without speech therapy.

Try it and see how your child feels after class. If he or she is uncomfortable and you don't see any improvement, you can always stop.

Best of luck to you.

Most speech therapists will recommend that you hold off on speech therapy until the child is at least five years old. The reason is that a lot can happen up until that age (my nephew is proof of that, his speech changed a great deal between the ages of three and five)

I'm not a professional, but my brothers impediment was so bad I was the family translator. My family became frustrated and he saw a pathologist for a short time. He was very young, about the same age. He overcame the quirks and you'd never know today that there was ever a problem.

I know of a family member that had a speech therapist at that age. They worked wonders with him and now everyone can understand him better.

hi.... very effective.. for over a year my daughter had ear infections... they were cronic and anti b. would not clear them up..

so finally they agreeded to do surgery... they did a hearing test before and after....for that one year or more that she had ear infections she could not hear properly....

so she started speech when she was three... since she could not hear for that year plus.. she was behind in her speach..

now her speech is fine.... well now she is twelve... but it did wonders for her...

also my nephew started speech when he was three....

before speech people could not understand what my daughter was saying. so i would translate for her... i knew what she was saying because i was around her all the time. and picked up on her words and what she meant.....

to sum it up... it is not going to hurt anything.... and its a fun time for the child... its like a pre school time..

Umm, you're overinvolved a bit much. Poor kid, I know this won't get ten points, but just let your kid be normal. Does your child speak at all? I'd just let your kid watch t.v. and be around talking people and try not to pressure it. If worst comes to worst, then maybe. But wow, he's going to have all these Freudian pressures bothering him in his later years.
