I'm writing a creative story.

I want to look for names for my characters, but I want them to have some meaning. Does anyone know a website that would allow me to convert MEANING into NAME not the other way around.

I need both first and last names.

One method: start with the meaning words and some synonyms and then vary some letters and sounds in them until youve created yourself a name you like but that will still suggest or be obviously derived from the original word and so suggest its meaning. That way you can be more specfic and creative in choosing or inventing the exact meaning you want to convey with the name you created. You can be more specific and subtle and creative than, "Miss Joy, Helen Dullboy, Dan Zeus, Mr Meriwether."
"John" means God+Love in some fashion or other but few think of that meaning with the word today. "Where do the Wickets live? Oh, they're next door to the Debbels." But Google might find the reference you asked for if you work with your query wording a little.

Go to http://www.behindthename.com ...It allows you to search both meaning and name, and has thousands of names from all over the world, including things from Lord of the Rings, and Mythology and other such things. It has mostly first names, but there are surnames on there too, and ones that can be used for that purpose too.

It comes up with highly original names. however, if you want something out of the ordinary for fantasy names, then go to
http://rinkworks.com/namegen/

Some less popular ones that I've also found are:

http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names/generators.htm

and

http://nine.frenchboys.net/fanname.php

Behind The Name is definately the best though.

Hope it helps!

I know that you can go to any baby name website and get the meaning of names, so far as lasts names some may probably give this as well. just place in search bar meaning of names, baby names etc. There are many sites that you can go to.
