the reason you need to ever change the oil in your car is contamination. dust, dirt, and other thinks contaminate the oil and cause it to go bad. if you dont drive your car often, the oil isnt contaminating as fast and you dont need to change it EVERY 3 months.

the story i always use is... my grandmother drives only 500 miles (to go shopping and the docters) in 3 months. so why should she have to pay to have the oil changes again if she isnt going to be driving that much.

change it every 3,000 miles and thats all you need to do

ADDED...

if you have regular oil in you car, DO NOT change it to a synthetic. the two differant types of oil are not compatible with each other and the addvantage of the synthetic is lost because of the mixture. its almost the same effect as if you were to put oil in water. they will seperate and you will have inconsistant oil

The manual?? Don't pay any attention to the manual. Some manuals tell you not to change your oil for up to 7000 miles!!! That's outrageous. If the oil is not changed every 3000 miles sludge deposits will form on the inside of your engine, and you will have internal engine failure. Think of it this way... oil change =30 bucks. New engine plus labor= 4000 bucks.

It shouldn't affect anything, as long as you change it at 3,000 miles. Most oils are rated for 5 or 6,000 miles now days.

Just go by the miles... but f you dont want to change that often you can load up on some synthetic oil. they can go from 6,000 to 10,000 miles before changing it. You can find the specs of it on the bottle itself

If you don't drive your car very often, change it every 3K. If you drive very often you can go all the way up to 7K regardless of how many months..

Follow your manufacturer recommendations, not the local oil change shop... they want you to change as much as possible so they can make money off you. I personally wouldnt worry about the months.

if you drive it a lot in the heavy dust it's best to change it every 3 months otherwise you will be okay up to 5,000 miles.
