Actually, there are only a few questions that an employer can ask a previous employer. If you were employed with the company, when and for how long, what type of position you held and if you are re-hirable.
They can't get into attendance, lateness, etc., etc.

You can request that they new employer doesn't contact your previous employer. Just be honest and say you parted ways on mutually bad terms and nothing more. Everyone else has provided good information for you.

The other answerers have it right, but if an former employer is blackballing you, you have to have proof before you can do anything about it, which is almost impossible.
