i'm sure that you can find a real aptitude test from either your high school or college advisor (i don't know what school you're in) and it can help you figure out what you would want to do in the future. it's a lot of questions about what you like to do and what your skills are... it's pretty accurate if you answer truthfully. it was right on the dot w/me.

or instead of taking a test, list what you like to do and what your skills are. college, to me, was all about self-exploration to see what i was good at and what i liked to study. so, do a little trial and error and you'll find something to major in.

The best advice I was given when I asked that same question was, "Look at what you like to do best and go from there." At the Jr. college level,I earned an AA in Liberal Arts, and all the classes were great. Still not having declared a major, I completed whatever classes I could at that level before transferring to the university. As I love watching, meeting and talking to and about people, I felt most drawn to Sociology, so selected it as my major. It is indeed my field; I love helping/facilitating the success of others, and currently work at a non-profit Family Resource Center. I would like to work in my county's Social Services Department.

Most colleges will let you enter without any major decided yet -- a lot of people take a variety of classes their first year of college so that they can figure out what they're really interested in.

However, if you know what kind of a job/career you want already, then you should talk to your school counselor and ask them what you will probably want to major in.

Of course, you want to choose a field that interests you. However, it is important to make certain that what interests you will provide you with an income that is in line with the years you spend in higher ed. I have a Master's degree, but there is nothing in my field that remotely pays enough to justify my degree. I am now working outside my discipline.

Research the "hot" jobs. The Department of Labor and The Chronicle of Higher Education list projections of the most readily available employment by the time you complete your degree.

Most important . . . . don't be too hasty! This decision is with you the rest of your life. Visit the advising center, counseling center, and career center on your campus, if they are available.

Your first two years of college will be spent taking required "liberal arts" courses. During this time most students find which courses interest them the most. By your junior year you should have a pretty good idea of what you want to do with your life and which courses to take in order to prepare yourself. Some other factors that will influence your decision making will be that, by your junior year, you'll be more mature and more focused.

you can be an exploratory major.. you will take classes from all different majors, and find out what you like best... some people don't declare a major until their senior year.. just don't decide on one until your sure.. it will save lots of time and $$!

at least you have two years of lower division classes to figure it out. pick what you dig, just make sure the jobs you can get with that kind of degree are not monumentally awful.
