i hear you man. i think that ppl knew of ipod first because it was on tv, and most ppl dont bother to research their options before they blow their cash. i have an iRiver h10 that i got for a lot less than an ipod that holds the same amount, and i dont have to worry about it falling apart on me. i bought the iriver after seeing a friend drop his several times, and it still keeps on kicking.
also, theres a linear touch pad, not a circle, so i dont have to keep spinning my thumb around all day to scroll through my songs.

Brand Name of course.
iPods are relatively good quality MP3 players, and although not "ground-breaking" by any means they consistently push the edge of "media players" because they have such a thrust with their name.
iPods internal batteries are the only real ripoff, since they are essentially designed to die after 2-3 years, even with minimal use, and are not individually replaceable -- gotta replace the whole player.
iTunes, however, is definatly a great program. I think the easy user interface, and pure power of iTunes attracts a lot of people looking to get something like this, and for maximum compatability and control, iTunes works best with an iPod.
Don't think there arn't better MP3s out there, but iPods arn't all that bad. A lot of their products have really pushed the whole industry into a competative market, and are actually largely responsible for the Flash Memory revolution which may end up playing a huge role in general computing in the next decade.

I know what you mean. When I was researching which mp3 player to buy, i found this site with squillions of ipod users complaining about how crap their ipods were. SO many of them had gone through several of them - they bought one, it broke, they got another one, that broke soon after, then they got ANOTHER one... and it goes on. Why on earth would you keep buying something that breaks on you? In the end I bought a Toshiba gigabeat F40, which stores and displays photos and has a 40gb hard drive and I got it for $220AU new! And it is awesome - it's really tough and easy to use and I haven't had any problems with it. Ipod users just get sucked into the image factor. You're not cool unless you've got those white earphones on!

yea i know. People buy ipods even though their more expensive and dont even come close to the features that other products do in the same price range. All they have is popularity and size.
The most annoying thing is when people buy an ipod and have no clue how to use it. They should go get a cassette player
