If you're just starting out, I'd strongly recommend getting some lessons. Most music stores offer lessons, and you can look in the local papers as well for teachers. A lot of people learn to play just using tabs from the internet, but I think you're better off learning to read music, which you can do pretty easily from just about any guitar book. Then try to learn some easy songs that you are already familiar with. The internet might help you there, but above all trust your ear and make sure that what you are playing sounds correct. But the bottom line is lessons, and lots of practicing.

okay! I've been there before. Now the 1st thing u do is get a guitar book! They Sell them at your nearest Music Store. Once you have that it's time to learn to read music! If you already know how to read music that's great! Your off to a Fantastic start! the book will tell you everything u need to know to get started playing right away! If You like You can get book 2 of that particular book you got, OR you can go to a place like
www.ultimate-guitar.com
to learn more popular songs that u listen to or what ever.
Well Your Ready to start playing Rock star!

get yourself a beginner book to teach you the basic chords. learn some basic timing, and rhythm. then just play some music and play along as best as you can by ear. It will come with practice. playing by ear is by far the best way. also get on line for guitar tab instruction its very easy step by step system. good luck and rock on. I am self taught, been playing for 15 years now, still having a blast.

depends on what youre more comfortable with. you can get a lesson book or a dvd. They can work well but I worked better by myself. I tried playing around with it first and then started getting tabs online and slowly worked my way up. Try www.ultimate-guitar.com, they have good tabs and lessons too. Dont get frustrated because it takes time and practice. It might seem like youre not getting it but you really out. Start slow, dont expect to be fast right away, slowly youll get faster and more accurate. Most importantly play things you like and make sure you have fun when playing.

If you don't wish to take lessons...have a friend show you some chords. Better yet, get a book that has the diagrams of all the chords and learn, plus there will be songs in the books. Available at all music stores

you can get a book, but lessons are the best way because an instructor can teach you how to UNDERSTAND the book. Eventually you will be able to teach yourself. Good luck

try guitar vision program online where you download notes or go to the store where you bought the guitar and buy yourself a lesson book or cds.
