Use your calculator for the decimal answer. Here's how to figure out the simplified yet whole number version (by the way, "sq" means "the square root of":

ok, so you start off with: sq(172). I look at this problem and I try to find a number that I know can be square rooted out of it (like 4 or 16 or 25). So I try doing 172 divided by 4, and apparently I get 43! That looks like a prime number to me -- I don't think that 43 can be factored any more, so I guess I've found my answer. Here's how it looks algebraically:

sq(172)
sq(4 * 43)
2 * sq(43)

That is math, not geography. Repeat three times, this is math, not geography. Then borrow your daddy's calculator, and you'll find the answer. You should know that 12 squared is 144, and 13 squared is 169, so what you want should be just a little bit more than 13.
