If a child begins Kindergarten at age 5 they will be 17 when in 12th grade and graduating. If a child's birthday falls past a certain date (Sept. I think) they will start K at age 6 and be 18 when graduate. Some very bright students can complete HSchool at age 10 + and go to college at 11+. Not a good thing but genius will out. Many students can graduate at 16 by taking summer school, etc. In the U.S. it is considered in the student's best interest if they take the allotted time and graduate at 17 or 18 so that they may mature emotionally and catch up with the physical part of it.
Sadly, the drop out rate increases yearly with minority students dropping out in numbers far greater than their population representation. The reasons are as numerus as the hundreds of hours of procrastination they committed getting into high school. Most will end up going back to school as adults when they realize that education is a really good thing and in fact is the ONLY thing a teenager needs to be engaged in.
