It is easy to be mad at people who are on welfare, and some definitely take advantage of the system......I don't know why some do this, because being on welfare keeps you living in poverty, crappy places to live, and little food on your table.
Some people do not want to be on welfare and stuggle for a long time to get off.
Take sociology 101, and you will learn about class structure. Society is set up so that there are the haves and have nots. The high class, the middles class, the low class and the in betweens.
The high classes profit off the middle and lower class people in the end, if you follow the money. The middle class people make there living in jobs that serve the poor.
Then you have to look at the values and morals of people. The values and morals of people today encourage the break up of families. The break up of families leads to more impovershment.
The government keeps people out of work on purpose, by giving grants to those in need of further education. This keeps the job market open for many others.
Take a sociology class, it helps to see the entire picture.
What i do see happening in Maine where i live, is an increasing number of bank robberies, car shopping, mail theft (from me,and then they cashed my check) house break ins. The thing that is driving alot of this though are the drugs that people are addicted to, people rob the pharmecies for there drugs.
Mix drugs with poverty and it will raise alot. Being on welfare doesn't imply being a thief though.
Some people are disabled, or have been disabled because of unfortunate circumstances, like disorder, disease, or accidents.
There social security can take years to get early. Like my father who had a heart attack, actually several, and open heart surgery, it took him about six years to get his S.S. money. I was still pretty young, and we all wound up on welfare. It was a horrible existance.
I think money could be spent on better programs designed to help people become self-sufficient, instead of crippling them.

It does make me mad sometimes. I was on a Pell Grant to go to school and my govt check was 2 months worth of what someone who does nothing all day makes on welfare. And I was busting my a** for that check. There are some people who do fall on hard times and legitimately need it but there are other people who are useless and taking $ away from the harworking people. The useless people probably would steal from others if they didn't get that support, they would do whatever they could to get the most $ for the least amount of effort.
Then again, how much do they really get? 500.00/month?
Depending on where you live (and even if you live in a town where rent is 150.00/month) their quality of life can't possibly be that good. So there is a trade off in that sense. If you work for a living you get nice things. If you sit on your a** all day you still get to eat but not much else.

The problem is, is that some people aren't "lazy welfare folks." They really need the assistance and would most likely die if it weren't for the fact that people care enough about the less fortunate to enact laws to their benefit. I agree that some people "milk" the system, but to deprive the needy because of the jerks abusing the welfare system is doing a great injustice to those that really need welfare. Why penalize them for the misdeeds of the miscreants?

Interesting question. I would imagine that a percentage would become involved or increase their involvement with criminal activities. I would argue that the increase in crime is more dangerous than stealing from us. Think organized crime, prostitution, and drugs .. . these are far worse than the stolen Honda or the unoccupied break-ins.
Of course, there are people who properly use the assistance to get on their feet. They move off the system as quickly as possible.

this sucks really, there are a lot of people that really do need it, and there are so many more that abuse it, its sickening! I know, because I know someone who does and I hate her for it, I work everyday and I know her lazy *** can get up and get a job too, but the ***** is too lazy! Then all the people that could be helped sometimes are shortchanged because of all those people who take advantage of it
I know I didnt really answer the question but you know I just wanted to have a say on it

Welfare recipients aren't lazy; they're just addicted to free money. Like all addicts you have to cut them off with a sensible plan so they don't die from withdrawal. If you don't want them stealing from you, you just have to fund after school programs until the traces of the free money drug has faded from their social memory. An ounce of prevention …

They pay MUCH more out to corporate welfare, which I think is absoltely ridiculous! They give tons of money to corporations who make promises, cash the check from Uncle Sam, and then don't keep their promises. Levi jeans took a bit payout from the gov. to keep manufacturing here - 3 months later they moved everything to Chine. Art Modell was paid $300 MILLION just to bring the Raven's to Baltimore - that was JUST TO BRING THEM THERE!!!!!!
