I have a very strong dark side. When I watch horror movies, I sort of find a place where I fit in, if only for a little while. I keep my darkness nicely confined and tamed, partly from watching horror movies. Plus, horror movies have much more intersting plots than romantic comedies.

I like good horror films because they present cinema as an actual art form. The director typically has a strong presence, even perhaps stronger than the lead actors (see Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead II"). In a standard drama (non-genre film) the style of the film is usually completely masked under the story (story and acting are king). But horror is an open emotional experience and style and experimentation are suddenly acceptable in the film medium. Strange camera angles and strong atmosphere would typically distract a viewer from a love story. However, in a horror film, they are all part of the fun. How many love stories have the camera take a prolonged point of view of a mysterious person? (a la "Halloween" for example) I love point of view shots and they practically wouldn't exist without the horror film! Some directors like Ridley Scott use a lot of atmosphere (like fog and rain and dramatic lighting) to enhance action and drama (he comes from a horror and sci-fi background, "Alien", and "Blade Runner" etc.) But typically these are only used in genre films. I think movies should be designed to tell their story visually. Great directors do this no matter what type of film they are making. Good horror films are a visual art form that can take advantage of cinema's one strength and the thing that sets it apart from other art forms (like literature or theatre). That's my opinion.

It is a matter of personal preference. Everyone likes different styles of movies. What makes a romance movie appealing? What makes an action movie appealing? What makes a comedy appealing?
It depends on what the viewer wants. Do you want to laugh, cry, scream etc?
For me, a horror movie is something that is supposed to be scary and unpredictable. You are supposed to be at the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. Most fail to do so since in our present society, a horror film is more about gore then it is the "scare".

Well personally for me i love horror movies for that acre that u get. I enjoy not knowing whats gonna come up next or if the characetr in the movie will die. Its almost like an adrenaline rush i guess u can say, its the thought of not knowing what might be around the corner or under the bed that makes me love horror movies. I reccomend u watch a scary movie, something like Silent Hill, it keeps u guessing and wondering why :)

It's the rush you get from being scared or startled. Its a less active form of an adrenaline rush like when you are on a roller coaster or sky diving.

because you cant just laugh all the time, you gotta be fearful too, and also if you see it with a group of people they just crack jokes so its not scary. also horror movies are great for dates because the girl gets scared into your arms =P

People like to be scared i mean we dont like to be scared but we like the fact that we can be scared and laugh about how silly we act. it's very psychological that we like horror movies because it gives us something to laugh about that we get that scared about something that cant touch us

They don't scare me anymore, I don't even watch them either. I think people like to see blood more these days, and to be thrilled!
