I'd have to say Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane are right up there.

Jimi Hendrix was a huge (Rahsaan) Roland Kirk fan, that's a fact. Kirk's playing was a real influence on Jimi Hendrix. If you listen to them both, it's pretty obvious that Jimi was influenced by Kirk.

A lot of the jazz guys were using their horns in ways that it wasn't intended to be used. They were getting all types of sounds from their instruments. Jimi also found a way to use his instrument in a way that it was not intended to be used-feedback. Feedback was a unwanted technical difficulty up until Jimi used it for his own purposes. In my opinion, Jimi dug that the jazz saxophone players were using their instruments in unorthodox ways, so he tried it himself. Of course, Jimi's influence brought change to the way rock was played by guitarists ever since.
