There is a ton of information out there about dog breeds. If you are active, you might want to look at the herding breeds. Terriers might work for you too. But, do some research. And then spend time with the dog. See if you can have a sleep over with the dog. See how it reacts to the horses.
Remember, getting a dog is a committment for the life of the dog. Make sure that you are suited to each other. If you do take the time to do this, you will be rewarded with a wonderful companion.

depends on what you want to do with him. If its going to be a pet or actually serve a function. if you want an active dog, then a herding class dog, or a working class dog(as listed by the AKC), might be what your looking for. Are you going to keep him inside or an outside dog, want a lot of maintenance or a dog thats pretty much little care? That will determine if he'll be long haired or short haired. if you ask me for my two cents, a shepard is awesome in all aspects, from guard to house pet but they do shed. A standard poodle(the big one) is also an awesome breed and believe it not are used as police dogs in France, they are smart as a whip! But look into an Airedale Terrier, they are smart, agile, can defend themselves and be guardians, are wire haired so they are low maintenance, good swimmers, they are full of energy and make great dogs on the farm. Read up on them, you'll be surprised!

I love the labs, border collies have lot of energy and are used for herding ,agility, frisbee, etc. they are very intelligent. Ask you self a few questions. Do you want big or small dog? active lazy. basically what are you looking? then do research about the different breeds and find out what fits your profile. Getting a dog can be a lot of fun. by doing a little research you can a good idea of what you are looking for. Its a big commitment. look before you leap-good luck

I was going to say a female austrailian shepard, blue merril. But since you have horse you can handle the bigger one get a male of the same breed, blue merrils, austrailian shepards. They are incredibly discipline, loyal, love to play when you do sleep when you sleep. Obey easily. And they have a big capacity to show affection and safegaurd you as well.

My riding instructor has two goldens (and has had golden retrievers before) and they're wonderful around the horses. She also has two corgi/coyote crosses (part of a litter her old stablehand found abandoned by their mother outside of her ranch) and while they're the sweetest brothers ever I don't suggest getting either of those! =)
But goldens are active, friendly, loving and just love attention
and besides, theyre adorable!
Labs are great too!

labs make good outdoor dogs, or else a border collie might be helpful outside and you can train him to round up your horses for you!

One that is in an animal shelter begging for a home, and some one to love it. Check out your local one. You'll never find a more lovable, devoted pet. ( I'm not a PETA member and I own cats).
