I am a diehard Islanders fan, but I cant figure out why they signed him for such a long contract, he hasnt done anything, and is starting off horible again, Just like Yashin he will be untradeable, and they will not get their money's worth

A lot of good posts...I think people are being a little hard on Snow, as the contract was engineered by Milbury and Snow had nothingh to do with it.
Milbury has made so many boneheaded deals starting when he traded Palffy to LA for no one.
I agree with they should have keppt Peca and the defense that was taking them into the playoffs. Yashin plays some nights, but just skates around 75% of the time...Blake and Bates are the only 2 who play hard every night..Hunter had a great rookie campaign and needs to find that fire again... thye miss the grit of Scatart too.
Diepietro hopefully will come on in a year or 2 more..and stay in the net instead of trying to play the puck all the time

I agree we probably shouldve released yashin and never have gotten rid of peca, hamrlik, jonsson, aucoin or scatchard. I mean at least we were making the playoffs. Now were stuck with two useless players and hopeing that blake and satan will make something happen. bates and hunter need to step up and start doing something because we need some serious help. The game in phoenix we ridiculous and were not doing to well in san jose right now,

Although it appears to be a terribly bone-headed decision, the signing took place because the Islanders are obviously under the impression he will continually improve throughout his career. Keeping in mind that he is only 25, this may be a safe bet because often times goalies take a few years to develop once they are already in the nhl, similar to pitchers in baseball. He has been solid in his two full seasons and is definitely starter calibre, but as of now would not rank in the top 10 in the league. However, many starting goalies have fairly high salaries. It is important to look at the big picture which is that it works out to about 4.5 million a season. This is overpaying for the first years of the contract, but by the midpoint of the contract this will probably be a decent price for a starting goaltender.
Another thing to consider is how Florida just dealt their franchise goalie and are not expected to make the playoffs this year, even after bringing in some scoring help. I guess that should illustrate how hard it is to find a reliable goalie, and the importance of having one. This contract should eliminate any questions regarding goaltending for a long time.
Bottom Line: It is a huge risk taken by the organization, but if Rick develops into a top 5 tender (even for only 4-5 years) this will be looked at as one of the smartest hockey moves ever. If he doesn't, I'm just glad I'm not an Islanders fan.

They were jealous of their crosstown baseball team having an untradable player with a longterm contract (um A-rod) and decided that Yashin wasn't ridiculous enough, so they signed Ricky to a life time contract. Have fun EVER trading him.

Stupid owner in wang and rookie GM in Snow.
Dipietro can now cost along for 15 years if he would like. No matter what happens to him, whether he's benched, traded or let go he'll be getting MILLIONS of dollars from the Islanders.

LMAO......good question. Cause he wanted to stay in Long Island! Sorry for your gain, being from Ottawa, Yashin was a boob here too.

cause the new GM for the Islanders is a goalie that just retired and he wants to help the goalies get more money that's all. **** if it was Martin Brodeur their he would get like $200 million for maybe 10 years. its stupid and the worst move by the Islanders ever.
GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They want to make the bonehead move of alltime for hockey.
DiPietro could be a decent NHL goaltender, but he needs to be
a superstar for that deal to make any sense.

They say there's no such thing as bad publicity ... this deal may challenge that notion and many others.

Because the idiotic owner is an idiot who doesn't know **** about hockey. When you have the back-up goalie is your GM then you know the owner doesn't know anything.
