Pretty hard to say, because the term is so nebulous.
But the genre probably pre-dates the 70s.
For the roots, I'd go back to late 60s British acts - Cream, The Who, Zep, even the Kinks (there are prototype power-chord type songs in their early work!) The Beatles' 'Helter Skelter' was written as a direct response to The Who's increasingly heavy late 60s sound. Black Sabbath were a step later in the story, but played an important early role.
Importantly, none of these guys would have described their music as 'hard rock' - blues-rock, maybe. And that's all it was, in terms of chord progression and stuff - heavy, distorted blues. (See how the Yardbirds of Jimmy Page made a transition into Zep.)
KISS were influenced by all these bands, and had a glam-rock influence as well from artists like Bolan and Bowie.

I would say The Who were probally the first famous hard rock band. Then it would be Led Zepplin. Kiss came before ACDC though ;-)

No dude. MC5. Late 1960's band- total rebellion- loud ******* music... Not well known in the mainstream- Iggy Pop wanted to be these guys, same with Black Sabbath. MC5 use to tear apart their sets when they where done... Like The Who and Nirvana did... Awesome stuff, and they didn't need to hide behind wimpy makeup. Check em out!

No, there are older bands, but aren't they awesome? I have seen them 3 times. In college (with make up) then again in the late 80's (sans make up) and again with my daughter (once again with make up).
