barring adding more RAM, go to Start, click on Run and type in "msconfig" (no " marks), click on the "Startup" tab. These are the files that start when you start your computer. Take a look at the column named "Startup Item". Any item that has a check, enter the name of it in a search engine and learn what it is, you'll be amazed how many things start that you don't need. When done, click "Apply" and then click "OK". A popup will ask you if you want to restart, go ahead and when your system reboots, you should have freed up memory.

add more Ram.

RAM memory is like a closet. It is memory that the computer uses for whatever is currently being ran by the computer. Meaning if you have a few web sites open, that is all in RAM memory. When you close them out, they are removed from RAM.

Now if you have a lot of icons on your task bar, these are items that are half running or are running in the background. Many of these use RAM memory to fuction. So if any of these icons are not used on a regular basis, remove them.

It is always wise to over power your machine in RAM memory. It is the cheapest way to upgrade a computer. Normally 1 GIG of memory (on a card that you just plug in inside the computer) is about $100.

Being that you are on XP, you can also alot some space on the hard drive as a secondary RAM memory, up to 1 GIG I believe. But this is used mainly for large programs.

If tunes studder while playing, limit items you have open. Music takes a lot of memory to play, specially with iTunes. Winamp uses much less and might be a wise item to download.

FreeRAM XP Pro frees and optimizes your computer's RAM (Random Access Memory). Oftentimes, other applications may hog or incorrectly use RAM, which decreases your computer's performance. FreeRAM XP Pro frees this RAM so your computer can run faster and more smoothly. The need to reboot is also less frequent.

How does it work? FreeRAM XP clears junk out of RAM and flushes less-often used items to the swap file. There they do not take up any RAM, and are reloaded from the swap file on a need-to-use basis.

FreeRAM XP Pro's unique AutoFree feature enables it to clear out no longer useful data from RAM without affecting RAM still used by programs and applications.

there are some programs that can free up RAM before you start something... like TweakAll or something like that off of zdnet. They can dump some of the non-essential stuff that is sitting on the RAM chips and put it in virtual memory (on the HD instead of RAM.) This may help some but usually like everyone else has said... add more RAM.

There is a program that I like but maybe hard to use. it's called Startup CPL.... it's a program that will add it self to the control panel and you can use it instead of using the "msconfig" that the other person suggested... it will do the job and you won't have to worry about removing or deleting something essential, but if you screw it up it's kinda hard to go back... not impossible.. just hard.

You either buy more RAM for your computer, or check and see what other programs are running. Turn off the programs you aren't using. Also, you can hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then click the "Processes" tab and check and see if any of those programs running are legit programs or trojans.

You might want to defrag your hard disk too.

either use a program like Freeram XP, or install more ram physically.

You really cant "free up ram". All you can do is add more or run less programs at once.
