I'm a huge Yankee fan. Always have been, always will. I know a lot of Met fans who absolutely despise the Yankees. Seeing the Yankees lose today was very upsetting and aggravating. But my father and I were watching the Met game tonight. Since the Yankees are out, now we're rooting for the Mets. If not one NY team, at least the other, right? Even if they aren't our favorites.

Do Met fans feel similarly? Like if you watch a Yankee game, do you root for the Yankees to win (providing they aren't playing the Mets), since they're still a New York team? I know every fan is different, but I'm just trying to get a general idea.

I have to agree with Donna J. I'm a die-hard Mets fan. If we reverse the situation, I'd be having bad moods for weeks. But, I'd probably still root for the Yankees just because they're from New York. However, the whole fans issue will turn me off. I hate the the fans more than the team itself. If they're die-hard Yankees fans (some of them really are), I'd understand. But, some so-called Yankees fans once had the guts to make fun of me wearing a Mets shirt. I was walking down the street, minding my own damn business and this stupid jerk and his friends started to smirk at me and they walked passed by me saying, "Mets suck!". That's when I realize that it's not so much the team but the fans.

See, from what I've heard - you're the exception, not the rule to the Yankee fans. Yes, I want New York to win... but... it's the yankees. I can respect the yankees, but I don't respect most of their fans because their fans seem to have a very difficult time being objective...

Personally, I like National league baseball - NO DH - I think that cheats the game - so I root for the NL team more than the New York team - to me, when the NL wins, that helps demonstrate that the NL is the best style of baseball.

I will say one thing - I'm proud to be a New Yorker and a baseball fan - remembering how civilized NYC was in 2000 - and how no sporting event, baseball, football, hockey, or basketball ever seems to result in the truly insane violence that seems to occur in half the cities in the country when they win - or lose - a championship.

Speaking as a long time Mets fan, it is sometimes hard for me to root for the Yankees. It is not the team, but their fans. Not all, but MOST are rude, crude, obnoxious, petty, and spoiled. They are poor winners as well as poor losers. The NY media doesn't help much either. Even as the Mets win, they get very little coverage. Its all about the Yankees, A-Rod etc. You can kick a dog just so much before it will bite back. Seeing the Yankees lose was a win for most Met fans who are left to feel like the "Bastard" children of NY baseball. Its not so much we are rooting against the team as we are against the fans.

No, not at all.
I am a die-hard Mets fan formerly from NYC and every year that the Yankees were in the series, no I would pull for the National league with the exception of the Braves, or playoffs in general I would pull for any other team they were going against. I was even happy when Boston broke the curse. Sorry just being honest.

Even though i am not a Yankee fan or a Mets fan, but believe it or not back in 2000 World Series, I was rooting for the Mets back then. But as for Now, i am a Boston fan all the way.
But i am very Happy for Detroit to be in the 2nd round of the Playoffs though. So i am sorry to say this but....

GO DETROIT!!!!!

I can tell you from sports in general that the answer is yes.

It reminds me of an old saying "I can beat up my brother as much as I want, but don't you lay a hand on him".

In local football, you hate the team that's 10 or 15 minutes down the road, but if they make it to the playoffs and you don't, you're rooting for them. They still represent your area, and a piece of your team.

I'm a Diamondback fan, so I never want the Yankees to win at all.
However, the Mets are great (I grew up in NJ) and they are my nephew's favorite team.

So - Go Mets!
