3. Andersonville by MacKinlay Kanton
4. Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
5. When Bad Things Happen to Good People by Harold S. Kushner
6. Captains and the Kings by Taylor Caldwell
7. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
8. Mandingo by Kyle Onstott
9. Tattooed Rood by Kyle Onstott
10. Toad of Toad Hall by Kenneth Grahame
11. A Cherokee Tragedy by Thurman Wilkins
12. The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss
13. Charlotte's Webb by E. B. White

I am 65, and have probably read over 10,000 books since I was six years old. I have two daughters I read to every night, even after they could read. Reading is an exquisite adventure. You will never be lonely if you read.

"The Child of The Phoenix" by Barbara Erskine. I felt connected with the character.
Plot: Raised by her fiercely Welsh nurse to support the Celtic cause against the predatory English king, Princess Eleyne is taught to worship the old gods, to look into the future and sometimes the past. However, unable to identify time and place in her terrifying visions, she is powerless to avert forthcoming tragedy...

If you don't like that then try another of Barbara's books, like "Midnight is a Lonely Place" or "The House of Echoes" - those two are about ghosts and they're good cause they keep you in suspense throughout the whole book. Unless you can't tell I'm really into Erskine's stuff right now. lol

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit

No other series affected me the way those did. They're the only ones I can reread without getting bored.

Secondary choices:
I also liked Ender's Game, CS Lewis Narnia series, Arthur C Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama and Childhood's End. Oh yes, and the Harry Potter series.

Well, this might be sort of an odd one, and it does enlist some strange reactions in peoples because the subject is so touchy...but I would think it is an important book because for a lot of people that wanted to hide their heads in the sand at the plight of their brothers and sisters of this earth in slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin. It awoke a spiritual consciousness within people and it set a trend for people to become active in protesting man imprisoning his fellow man. Now if that is not to your liking, Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath is also a must read. It is Steinbeck at his best and a very evocative picture of man's struggle to endeavor.

~To Kill A Mockingbird

I love a story that is told through the eyes of a child. The book has brilliant characters and a very moving storyline. Atticus Finch is truly the most noble character in modern fiction.

I really like Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite, because it is a very unconventional Vampire novel. Most vampite novels follow suit of Dracula, but this is a modern take on vampires, and its very erotic, too.
It is a very explicit book, so if you are not into sexually explicit literature, or do not like horror stories, I do not recommend it.
That is to say, it is not a trashy romance novel in the least. It contains very dynamic writing and the words paint pictures in my mind. Poppy Z. Brite is a very descriptive writer, and she never fails to make a page turner, in my opinion.

Anything by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.... sorry but to pick one would be a disservice to other truly great works. But I will confess that "Pride and Prejudice" is a delight. Read it long before the movie (which does honour to a great author), and loving the magic of books, my loyalty goes to reading this book.

Chuck Palahniuk's "Survivor". It's a topic unlike anything I've ever read. It's about a man who's the last survivor of a cult, and he has hijacked a plane and is recording his story into the plane's black box or something like that.
