Endowment can mean an economic grant from a philanthropist to fund some cause or it can also mean anything that is given to another. Our Declaration of Independence mentions that we were "endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights." In simple conjucation, those rights are "endowments," but the general use of the word refers to the above mentioned grants.
