You can have just a burner.

If you have a disc that needs copied all you do is copy it to say a folder you create on your desktop. Then put in a blank cd and burn it to the cd.

If you plan on burning alot of cd's as in duplicating cd's, I would opt for a normal cd player and a burner, it removes the desktop folder option and makes things much faster.

I personally only have a dvd/cd burner as my only cd player. It plays all, burns all.

You can use a combo drive and have a cd burner.

A cd burner drive ALSO acts as a regular cd drive, fyi.

if your going to make a copy of a cd, the software usually caches the cd to the harddrive anyway wether you have 2 drives or not. if you only have one cd burner drive, put in the source disk and click start. the program should read the entire disk, eject it and ask for the destination disk, when you put it in it'll resume burning to that disk. 2 seperate drives aren't required.

You only have to have one, unless it says otherwise on the documentation that came with the cd burner/computer(if cd burner came with computer).

you only need a cd burner because it will also play cds -- its just easier to have a cd and a cd burner if you want to copy disk to disk

Sandy is right. Your CD Authoring software will read the source CD and then create image file on your harddisk (Got to have enough hard disk space) then it will will the content into destination CD.
