The theory I'm most familiar with is the one attributes left-handedness to the lack of a gene that causes right-handedness (rather than the presence of a 'left-handed gene'). There are a number of other theories, some involving a combination of genes and some claiming that handedness is also partly influenced by environment.
This site offers a clear enough explanation: http://www.sciam.com/askexpert_question.cfm?articleID=0008F1AD-FE6F-10D2-BE6F83414B7FFE9F&catID=3&chanID=sa005

My brother was left handed and no amount of aversive training changed that. The genes are like a recipe; there is a mixture, not one to one mapping, except for the things of this nature. Then you could think of left-handedness as the cherry on top of the cake recipe.

Scientists observing babies in the womb have observed, whatever thumb the baby is sucking, is the hand the baby will write with later in life out of the womb.
I am 3rd generation leftie and oldest daughter is 4th generation. That means my maternal Grandmother, my mother, myself, daughter. We think we have a 5th generation grandson. He's
3 1/2 and eats and draws and doodles with the left hand.

I would say yes. I have been observed this situation for years. But in some cultures, the left-handed kids are taught to use their right hand instead of left. Therefore, right-handed is more prominent in some cultures.

I am left handed, the only one in my family. My oldest daughter
is left handed and my youngest daughter (almost two years old) show signs of being left handed.

in part, and we don't extremely understand what share everybody is extremely "left exceeded." extremely some it is barely based on the form you be taught as a newborn, that's based lots on which hand your frequently happening "instructor" is.
