Yes, it's absolutely essential. Everybody has at least 1 hand-held calculator these days. I have 2 myself. Yes, they're very convenient. But I often encounter situations where I need to make quick calculations & don't have easy access to one. So, I either calculate on paper or in my head. So, basic math skills are necessary in such cases. Besides that, there's an old saying: "Use it or lose it." This certainly appies to mathematical knowledge.

They need to know how to do math. If you go to the store you will have to be able to count so you can give them enough money. You need to know how to count to make sure they give you back your correct amount of change and not rip you off. You need to know cause math is required when filling out your income taxes and other important documents. You need to know how to count money to pay your bills, figure out a budget and such. You need to know how to tell time. If you need to get to another state in a certain amount of time and you are driving you are going to want to know how many hours it will take you to get there, so you know what time you need to leave, you need to know how many miles you can drive before you have to stop for gas, and how much gas money you are going to need. see math comes in handy and is used often in life for many things.

like it or not math is a part of everything so you could probably not teach them math exactly and they would still learn it after all.
