Why do we drive on the right side of the road versus the left, like other countries of English origin?

Believe it or not some American cities did drive on the left early in the 20th century. Very early on though the French made most of the cars in the world and they drove on the right. It looks as if the first American car makers basically copied the French because they had the best designs at the time.

Our British origin is irrelevant. They invented cars over 100 years AFTER we left British rule.
