Let me guss -- it overheated and burned-up, right? The northstar, while seemingly a techno-wonder when operating properly, is an aluminum hunk of slag when they start going wrong. There are so many complications surrounding the cooling systems, gasket failures, cooling port leaks, etc., etc., that GM does not even SELL a rebuild kit for it. You simply have to purchase a NEW crate engine when it lets go. $2,500.00 for a salvage engine is about the going rate -- but unless you KNOW the car it was in was maintained to a fault you may be in for the same situation a few months later.
www.car-parts.com is a good site for multiple salvage parts listings.
Go in peace...and enjoy that second job.

You want more than merely an engine, you want one of the most sophisticated engines on the market, and you aren't alone. The greater the demand, the higher the price.

Most wrecking yards will "test" the engine before sale, and will "guarantee" it for 30 or so days. The attitude is that ...."it ran when it got here, and that isn't the reason it crashed".
